In 2010, Angostura’s White Oak Rum found itself at a critical juncture. Once a beloved staple, the brand’s popularity had plummeted, with public perception reaching an all-time low. Angostura faced a stark decision: halt production entirely or embark on a bold effort to revitalise this heritage brand. Choosing the path of resilience and innovation, Angostura, in collaboration with the advertising agency Lonsdale Saatchi & Saatchi, launched the “When It Pours, You Reign” campaign. This new tagline and advertising strategy marked a significant turning point for White Oak. The campaign aimed to transform White Oak’s image from an outdated drink favoured by older generations to a trendy and versatile spirit capable of rivalling popular beverages like beer and other spirits.
The “When It Pours, You Reign” campaign was a resounding success. It effectively changed the public’s mindset, positioning White Oak as a chic and mixable drink perfect for contemporary tastes. Through a comprehensive 360-degree advertising approach, the campaign captured the imagination of a new, younger audience, making White Oak the drink of choice across the nation. The results were transformative. White Oak not only regained its status but surged ahead, becoming the top-selling spirit in Trinidad & Tobago. Its success extended beyond national borders, establishing White Oak as a regional leader in both sales and alcohol consumption. The revitalised brand now stands as a testament to Angostura’s strategic vision and commitment to preserving and enhancing its legacy.
The evolution of White Oak continued with the introduction of various impactful campaigns over the years. In 2019, we decided to take a different approach for White Oak’s Carnival coverage. Recognising the power of influencers, we cast interesting, upbeat, and vibrant ambassadors who embodied the White Oak brand. This strategy was designed to captivate our audience and create a strong connection with the brand. We introduced “The New Royalty,” an original, binge-worthy reality series. This series followed a group of young Trinidadians as they enjoyed the Carnival season with White Oak Rum. By hosting the series exclusively on social media, we created an engaging platform that resonated deeply with our audience. The response to “The New Royalty” exceeded our expectations. Viewers became invested in the storylines and characters, eagerly following their Carnival adventures. This engagement went beyond passive viewing; audiences were actively involved and wanted more content, proving the series’ impact.
In 2021, White Oak, having firmly established itself as the king of rums and spirits in its local market, set its sights on global expansion. The challenge was clear: how could White Oak resonate with new international markets, including Europe and the US, while maintaining its authentic Trinbagonian identity? This required a fresh look and a message that would appeal to the sophisticated tastes of a global audience. The brand adopted the new slogan “If You Know You Know” (IYKYK), aiming to leverage its past successes and momentum to push White Oak further than ever before. Aligned with the tone of the IYKYK campaign, the goal was to elevate White Oak’s bottle photography to a new level, making it resonate with an international audience while staying true to its roots. The aim was to create visuals that reflected the authenticity and vibrancy of the White Oak experience. To achieve this, we used grainy filters to give the photos an untouched, polaroid picture aesthetic, capturing the raw, real environments where the product is actually enjoyed. Hand shots and natural product placements were included to represent how the audience truly consumes and enjoys White Oak, bridging the gap between everyday moments and brand imagery. The results of this bold approach were outstanding. White Oak’s refreshed image and engaging campaign successfully attracted attention in new markets, significantly increasing brand awareness and sales internationally.
The journey of White Oak’s rebranding didn’t stop there. By continually evolving its marketing strategies and embracing innovative approaches, White Oak has maintained its relevance and appeal. For instance, the collaboration with Machel Montano for the Carnival campaign was another brilliant move that resonated deeply with the audience. This partnership not only highlighted White Oak’s connection to Trinidadian culture but also solidified its status as a brand that celebrates and promotes local talent.
Another noteworthy initiative was the documentary film project that delved into the rich cultural significance of dance in Trinidad and Tobago. By focusing on the stories of dancers and their integral role in Carnival, the documentary film provided a platform for underrepresented voices and further entrenched White Oak in the cultural fabric of the region.
Throughout these campaigns, my role as the Creative Director at Lonsdale Saatchi & Saatchi involved spearheading these transformative initiatives, ensuring that each campaign not only met but exceeded its objectives. The success of White Oak today is a testament to the power of innovative marketing, cultural sensitivity, and strategic vision.
In conclusion, the evolution of White Oak from 2010 to the present day is a remarkable story of resilience, innovation, and cultural celebration. From the transformative “When It Pours, You Reign” campaign to the impactful “The New Royalty” series, and the global expansion efforts under the IYKYK slogan, White Oak has continually reinvented itself while staying true to its roots. As we look to the future, the legacy of White Oak remains a shining example of how a brand can thrive through strategic creativity and a deep connection to its cultural heritage.
